Third Times the Charm!

I have to be honest, a good portion of my income goes to book purchases, and of that a really big chunk is for Dreamspinner Press books. Their books are consistently well written, thoroughly researched, and tightly edited. I wanted to be able to call myself a Dreamspinner author in the worst way, but was I good enough?

I came across a call for submissions for a Dreamspinner Press line called World of Love. At the time, they had yet to publish any books from the line, but it was based on the success of their States of Love line. In order to be considered, a detailed synopsis had to be sent, and based on that you were able to “reserve” your country. If they didn’t like the book you wrote, the country went back up for grabs.

Since I am usually a pantser (writing by the seat of your pants), not a plotter (outlining the book in advance), having to write this summary in advance was really tough. But when people say writing is a process – they mean it. Not just the process for each work, but the process by which you hone your craft. I’m impulsive and easily distracted, so that’s why I stuck with pantsing, but interestingly enough, that is not the ideal method for me. Being forced to write a detailed outline really helped me stay focused and thoroughly develop my characters. I was pantsing when I should have plotting – who knew?

I will definitely be blogging more about the process that went into writing this book in future posts, but I am so happy to share that my World of Love novella, “Ahava is Love” will be released by Dreamspinner Press on July 5, 2017! Click here for the Goodreads link, please add it to your to-read shelf, I know you will have so much fun with Josh & Yaron as they find love in Israel!

The Second Time Around

For Valentine’s Day, 2016 I was lucky enough to be a part of an anthology curated by R.J. Scott at Love Lane Books. She envisioned a free anthology incorporating new and established authors. She is an incredibly talented and deservedly successful author. Her willingness to pay it forward for a bunch of unknowns shows her amazing heart.

I submitted a short story, “Cupid in a Stroller,” for her consideration, and it was accepted! She edited the story and gave me so much guidance. Working with her was such a privilege. The book was published, containing stories from some of my favorite authors (who generously gave of their time and talent to be included) along with some great new ones – it was really an honor to be chosen.

Recently, I revised and expanded Cupid to be a 10,000 word novelette. It’s been re-edited and has a beautiful new cover designed by Reese Dante. This has been my first venture into self-publishing, and there’s been quite a learning curve. I plan to get the novelette released shortly. Please sign up for my mailing list to be kept in the loop!

"Cupid in a Stroller" Gay Romance by Avery Duran

When Brooklyn candy store owner Reese Thornton needs a break from the Valentine’s Day rush, a walk seems like a good idea. His day seems to pick up when he sees the man of his dreams pushing a cat in a stroller. Unfortunately, Reese does not have a working brain-to-mouth filter, and Mr. Right finds Reese to be Mr. Wrong. When their paths cross again, will he be able to hold onto Gideon, or will Cupid’s arrow miss them both?

My First Time

a peek into my teenage psyche from Avery Duran Author of Matzo Ball part of Sexy to Go Gay Romance
I’m a voracious reader, growing up I could usually be found with my face in a book. What many didn’t know was that I wrote as well. Poetry, horror, romance – whatever inspired me at any given moment went on paper.

For a peek into my teenage psyche, here are a couple of Haiku poems I found in an old journal. I was probably listening to The Smiths and wearing a Benetton sweater while I wrote them.

Winter
The white of the snow
Melts to reveal the brown grass
No birds are chirping

My Sister the Tattletale
Walkman playing loud
Can’t hear my parents talking
Guess I’m in trouble

As life got busy, there was little time to write and it fell to the wayside. A few years ago I discovered M/M romance and was inspired me to pick up my pen again. I loved the character driven storylines, the freedom to write without judgement, the ability to smash stereotypes. Support from the online community encouraged me to put on my big girl panties and submit something for publication, and wouldn’t you know it – I got published!

Matzo Ball was released by a now defunct publisher in 2015. Although the closing of the company was disheartening, it enabled me to say I was a published author. As my first foray into publishing, it was an invaluable learning experience and helped me to make some new friends. Fortunately, this sweet and sexy story about two gay men finding love at a straight singles mixer was re-released on April 1st as part of the Sexy to Go Anthology.

Sexy to Go Gay Romance with Matzo Ball by Avery DuranWhen Jacob’s outgoing best friend talks him into attending a party for Jewish singles, neither man realizes that it’s not a gay event. Things go from bad to worse when Jacob’s friend doesn’t show up. The night turns around when Jacob befriends Ian, a sexy bartender. After a spectacular kiss good night, they go their separate ways. But Jacob can’t forget the chemistry he shared with Ian, and hungers for more. In a city the size of New York, will these men be able to find their way back to each other?
